Brendan Lavelle ACS
Has been working professionally in the Australian film and TV industry since 1980. Starting as a stills photographer in the advertising and theatre world, he began his film career with director Paul Cox as a documentary camera operator. After several years of working with Cox, culminating in the 1987 feature film, The Life and Death of Vincent Van Gogh, he pursued a freelance career as a cinematographer.
Concentrating on TV drama, career highlights include Ponderosa, a US series using HD Video (an Australian first in 2001); Law of the Land (two series) and StingersThe Secret Life of Us (three series) for the Nine Network; (four series) and Murder Call (one series as second unit director/cinematographer) for Network Ten; House Gang for SBS and East of Everything (two series) and Bluewater High (one series) for ABC Television.
He also completed the feature films, Mallboy and Holidays On The River Yarra. Both films screened at the Cannes Film Festival, Directors Fortnight and many other international festivals.
In recent years Brendan has been increasingly involved with screen education. He has presented workshops around Australia for AFTRS Open Program, Swinburne University, RMIT, Open Channel, Australian Cinematographers Society and VCA. Currently he is teaching screen and media at TAFE colleges and is studiying for a Masters in Visual Arts through Griffith University. He also holds the Certificate 4 qualification in Training and Assessment.
